United as Black Belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, with Joy (aka “Killjoy” in the MMA world) also fighting as a professional mixed martial artist, their dynamic energy spills into every jar of their standout condiment. Joy’s roots trace back to the rolling hills of Northern California, where she worked as a beekeeper for over a decade at her family’s bee farm - Pendell Apiaries. After a trial jiu jitsu class in Sacramento—and meeting Lyzz that very same night—Joy was hooked. For over seven years, she balanced grueling days at the bee farm with a four-hour round-trip commute to train, her determination as fierce as the chilies in Killjoy’s Hot Honey. Though she now thrives as a full-time martial artist, both fighting professionally and operating her own martial arts studio, her family’s apiary remains at the heart of our operation, supplying the rich, local NorCal honey that gives Killjoy’s its signature sweet depth.

Lyzz, an environmental scientist and one of the region’s first female jiu jitsu Black Belts, brings her championship spirit to every facet of Killjoy’s. A multiple-time world titleholder, she’s the one who nudged Joy into her first tournament, igniting her competitive spirit. When she’s not training or teaching, Lyzz dives into the kitchen on hot honey production days, crafting small batches with care and delivering bottles of this fiery goodness to eager customers. Her passion for excellence ensures every jar is a knockout.
